First Unitarian Weekly News
July 17, 2008
Imagine a religion where inspiration
comes from not one
but many spiritual sources.
CARING NOTES
Susan Hendricks
reports that she is recuperating
well at home. All the tests
following her lung surgery have come
back clear and she is now cleared to
drive. Susan expressed her thanks
and appreciation for the many acts
of kindness and caring she has
received.
The Rev. Kate Rohde's
knee surgery has suffered a
setback. She is on a six week
program of antibiotics due to
infection. She is using crutches
and will continue the treatments
after she goes home today. When the
infection clears, she will return to
the hospital and have the new knee
put in. Notes, cards and brief
phone calls of encouragement will be
welcome. Please phone ahead before
visiting.
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
• First and Second Unitarian
Churches are teaming up for the
Brush Up Nebraska Paint-A-Thon —
Friday & Saturday, August 15 and
16. We haven't been
assigned our home to paint yet, but
go to
http://www.secondunitarianomaha.org/?id=paintathon to
view photos of the house we painted
last year. We will need ladders, and
you can bring along scrapers,
brushes, and gloves if you have any
of these items. We also need
volunteers to bring food and
beverages for the hungry and thirsty
workers. If you have any questions
or would like to sign up to help,
contact Clyde Anderson.
• The Split the Plate
beneficiary during the month of July
is Flood Relief with the PSD UUA:
The Prairie Star District
Board has set up a flood relief fund
to accept donations to assist
Unitarian Universalists whose homes
were damaged or destroyed, or whose
livelihoods were affected, and their
congregations.
The June Split the Plate
contributions were donated to
Habitat for Humanity. We are
volunteering with the Habitat Multi
Faith Coalition to renovate 4519
Nebraska. We will be out there
again on July 27. To volunteer,
contact Shawna Thompson.

Our July selection will be
Emotional Intelligence, by
Daniel Goleman. From the preface:
"Daniel Goleman's brilliant report
from the frontiers of psychology and
neuroscience offers startling new
insight into our 'two minds'—the
rational and the emotional—and how
they together shape our destiny…What
emerges is an entirely new way to
talk about being smart." Michael
Lin notes that readers may also be
interested in Goleman's sequel
Social Intelligence. Both are
available in paperback at The
Bookworm and from Amazon.com.

Parking Information
National Indemnity Company, our good
neighbor to the east, is making some
additional parking available to us
on Sundays. They rent the lot at the
south end of the Tamarak Building
and volunteered to let us use it on
Sundays. The Tamarak Building is on
the southeast corner of 31st and
Harney Streets.
If you
are able, please save the spaces in
our parking lot for our visitors and
for those of us who need to park
close. However,
please use our lot if you need to
carry stuff into church, have kids
to wrangle, or can’t comfortably or
safely walk from street parking. We
are saving these spaces for you!
